to start construction on major Hollywood beautification
project. |

City officials, business leaders, and community activists
will play leading roles in the making of Hollywood history,
as ground is broken for the new "Gateway to Hollywood," a $658,000
beautification project for the triangle located at the corners
of Franklin Avenue and Cahuenga Boulevard. Hailed as "the next
Landmark of Hollywood," the Gateway will serve as a beacon to
the city’s 8.8 million visitors and commuters, welcoming tourists
and residents alike. In order to bring life back to the triangle
of grass and dirt, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Councilmen Tom
LaBonge and Eric Garcetti, and Yucca Corridor Coalition President
Merle M. Singer will usher in an era of change, enabling the
beautification of historic Hollywood and eliminating crime,
drug, gang and prostitution activities, making Hollywood a safer
place to work and live. Mayor Emeritus Richard Riordan, representatives
from Mayor James Hahn’s office and congressional representatives
will also take part in this exciting ceremony.

The Gateway project is scheduled to be completed by summer
2002, and will feature a 30-foot triangular tower with H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D
on each side, illuminated with fiber optics, and crowned with
a cascading waterfall. Additionally, the artscape preserves
the existing Jacaranda tree as its centerpiece, and includes
new bus stop benches, lush green gardens and plants, and safe
pedestrian street lights.
For more than five years, the Yucca Corridor Coalition (YCC)
has partnered with a host of City and local groups to provide
a quality community to the residents, property managers and
business owners in the Corridor. The Gateway to Hollywood
project is a major step in the YCC’s multi-phase Beautification
program, ensuring that the Corridor is a safe and respectable
area that the entire City of Los Angeles can be proud of.
